Oral Care

Do we even know what's in our toothpaste? Most toothpaste contain sodium lauryl sulfates, propylene glycol, DEA, triclosan, and sodium fluoride. I already discussed the dangers of sulfates, glycol, DEA, and triclosan in my ingreients to avoid post, so let's talk about sodium fluoride.

There are two main forms of fluoride in the world. One is the natural version of fluoride, calcium fluoride. Calcium fluoride is naturally found in the soil and is not harmful to the environment or us. The other version of fluoride is an industrial synthetic called sodium fluoride. Sodium fluoride is a synthetic toxic waste that is known to cause cancer.

Dentists have promoted fluoride for years. According to the American Dental Association, fluoride helps remove plaque, which can cause gum disease and tooth decay. Fluoride also helps prevent tooth decay by strengthening tooth enamel. Who doesn't want to fight plaque and strengthen teeth? I sure do! The problem with the fluoride found in toothpaste is its sodium fluoride, not calcium fluoride. Sodium fluoride is a by-product of aluminum manufacturing. It's found in rat poisons and industrial pesticides. I guess if it kills rats it should kill your gum disease right?!?

You should find a toothpaste free of sodium fluoride and the other chemicals above.

Jason Powersmile - They sell a huge oline of fluoride free toothpaste. Just be sure to read the labels because they do sell a few that contain sodium fluoride. You can buy Jason toothpaste at Wegmans, Loris Natural Foods, or online.

Oil Pulling
Oil pulling is an oral detoxification procedure where you swish coconut oil in your mouth for up to 20 minutes then spit it out. It can help fight gingivitis, plaque, and microorganisms that cause bad breath. It can also help prevent tooth decay and cavities. My teeth are also noticeably whiter! Oil pulling works by cleaning the oral cavity. The bacteria and toxins in your mouth adhere to the coconut oil and are removed when you spit the mixture out. The process is very easy and should be done first thing in the morning before eating or drinking anything. Take anywhere from a tsp to a tbsp of coconut oil and swish it around in your mouth for 15-20 minutes. Spit the mixture out in the trash as you don't want the oil to ruin your pipes. Brush as normal. I have to admit, when I first started doing this it was brutal. Now it's a no-brainer, I actually put the oil in my mouth right before I get in the shower. I swish it around while i'm in the shower and spit it out when I get out.

Invitamin Charcoal Tooth & Gum Powder - It comes in a little 2.75 oz jar that looks like sand and smells like mint. The instructions say to wet my toothbrush, apply the powder, and brush normally. I wasn't sure if this was suppose to replace my normal toothpaste or if I was supposed to use this in addition to it? After reading the reviews, it says you can do either, so now I sprinkle the powder on top of my normal toothpaste. The verdict? I love it! It has a great minty taste, leaves my teeth feeling super clean, and I already notice my teeth a shade whiter. Let's not get carried away, my teeth don't look like I bleached them, but they do look whiter. I'm sure with continued use, you will see great results. It doesn't leave my mouth black and it doesn't make half the mess that the charcoal capsules make. It even comes with a little spoon in the jar so you can neatly sprinkle it right on your toothbrush!

Activated Charcoal Capsules - you can whiten your teeth with these capsules. Just Be careful, this powder form of charcoal gets everywhere! I got the capsules from the Vitamin Shoppe.
